6 Ways to Deal with Stress in Students from UNAIR Psychologists, Have You Tried?

Do you often feel the stress of studying at home during a pandemic? Have you ever figured out how to deal with stress in your learning?

Professor of Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) Prof. Dr. Nurul Hartini, M.Kes., Psychologist, said, stress in adolescents becomes a phenomenon that is no longer rarely found at this time. Because, the position of teenagers who are still in the growing stage and looking for themselves makes them vulnerable to stress.

Unair Professor of Clinical Psychology and Mental Health said, there are a number of ways to overcome stress for students. How to deal with stress in students from UNAIR psychologists as follows:

1. What is stress and how to deal with it

To cope with stress, you need to know first what stress is and how to deal with it.

Prof. Nurul said, stress will occur when someone assesses something that is present and accepted (stimulus) as a matter that burdens and exceeds resources or abilities. To overcome this, one needs to know what stimulus causes stress to appear and solve it.

He said an individual can be categorized as experiencing stress if the impact of stress on emotions, cognitive, and behavior continues for more than one week. Some examples of negative impacts of stress are anger, nausea, abdominal pain, diarrhea, can not concentrate, can not sleep, and others.

2. Get to know psychological stressors and philosophical stressors

Prof. Nurul explained, stress can arise due to stressors or pressure from inside and outside the self. Pressure from within can be caused by psychological and philosophical aspects.

"Simply put, if we feel good at math, then suddenly get a 7 and stress, that's a psychological stressor. Then if we are children of math teachers, then feel obliged to get a score above 8, it becomes a philosophical stressor," Nurul said in a webinar of the Faculty of Psychology UNAIR, quoted from the UNAIR website, Thursday (08/12/2021).

He said, meanwhile, external stressors can arise socially and environmentally. He pointed out, the situation of the COVID-19 pandemic can become an environmental stressor through the many news of death or the sound of ambulance sirens.

Prof. Nurul said, stress is something that can not be avoided and become part of the dynamics of human life. However, students can learn stress management and learn to show the right stress response.

He said stress management can be done by changing the way you think and behave when facing stress-causing problems.

"First, focus on the problem. Identify the problem, then change the source of your stress. Reduce also negative emotional responses in the face of stress," said Prof. Nurul.

4. Know the ability to cope with stress

Prof. Nurul said, students need to maintain quality and self-health to do well. The trick, said Prof. Nurul, is to try to turn stress into something that stimulates self-capacity optimally, and turns stress into a useful thing.

He said, for that, a student must know what his ability to deal with stress. "Whether the stress can be overcome alone or does it require others to provide support and solutions," said Prof. Nurul.

5. Social support of those closest to you

Prof. Nurul said, an individual will need help if he has experienced symptoms of stress.

He explained, some symptoms of stress are not able to solve problems on their own or experience a negative impact of stress on cognitive, emotional, and behavioral aspects.

Help can also come from several parties. The first is social support or social support from friends, peer counselors, relatives, parents, teachers, and other closest people.

6. Professional help counselor to psychiatrist

Prof. Nurul said, professional help from counselors, psychologists, psychiatrists can help students cope with stress. Professional help can also be contacted through the help of psychological services agencies as well as online counseling.

He pointed out, some service institutions that can be contacted are Himpsi Soul Service, call center 199 Ext. 8, Riliv, or other aid agencies.

"You are not alone and not alone. You must know, there are others who care and are ready to provide assistance," nurul concluded.
